Gaia Consulting calculated how much economical loss is made if nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus aren’t recycled, but released indirectly to the nature and to the atmosphere. Also, nutrients contaminate fresh water and are therefore more costly and problematic to filter from lakes and seas. In order to understand and communicate the impact of unrecycled nutrients, Sitra wanted to have an informative illustration about it. The form of the illustration is a cycle, because ideally all of the nutrients could be filtered from an early stage and utilised again. When nutrients are properly recycled they will not cause water contamination or end up in landfills.
Together with my colleagues we made six different scenarios how nitrogen and phosphorus could be recycled and below you can find two of them.
